Measles

Measles is primarily a respiratory infection caused by a highly contagious virus. Signs and symptoms of measles usually starts out like the common cold, with a cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, sore throat, fever and a red, blotchy skin rash. The infection leads to the emergence of rashes, which first appear on the cheeks and then spread over to the trunks, palms and soles. Initially pink in color, the rashes grow darker as time passes. Measles may also be accompanied with fever, diarrhea and watering of the eyes.
Usually, the progression of measles is fairly predictable. After two to three days of fever, a whole-body rash breaks out, the cough worsens and the fever pushes higher, into the 103° to 104° range. The fine red spots on the body may join together to form larger splotches. But the rash, which lasts from five to eight days, is not itchy.
